CNG Fueled Refuse Collection – Cheaper Than Diesel! - The Smithtown Story

Presented by: Russell K. Barnett, Town of Smithtown Environmental Protection Director

Facing rising prices for refuse collection services due to the rising price of diesel fuel, and recognizing an increasingly unstable world petroleum market as a threat to it’s municipal budget; the Town of Smithtown turned to alternative fuels. Tapping a compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle marketplace originally developed to meet stringent West Coast air quality requirements; this East Coast town has developed a reproducible model municipal program that not only improves local air quality and reduces reliance on imported petroleum, but also saves money. The solid waste professional that designed and implemented this program will discuss how it came into being and why other communities should consider deploying a CNG fueled refuse collection fleet.

Promoting Reuse with a Community Materials Exchange Program

Starting as a simple listing service, the MEX has now evolved into a highly sophisticated multi-site internet-based on-line searchable database that is both user friendly and free to use. The primary goal of the MEX, is to promote and facilitate reuse as a method to divert materials from landfill. RCBC currently operates three residential sites. Okanagareuses.com, Surreyreuses.com and Vancouver.reuses.com as well as the bcimex.ca, the designated Industrial Materials Exchange site. During the first six months of operation these sites received more than a million hits a month, saw more than two thousand successful exchanges and have diverted tens of thousands of tonnes from landfills.
